Tomato & Onion Chutney

Tamil recipes Tomato & Onion Chutney is a spicy side dish for any kind of south Indian food. It has chili powder based ingredients to make it hot and spicy. If you are not used to it can irritate and kind of give you a burning sensation in your mouth. It is traditional to use it as a side dish for rice varieties; yogurt based rice mix and other combinations. It is also used in north India for chappatis and roti as a kind of dip to spice up your menu.


  • Onions 1 cup
  • Tomato 1 cup
  • Oil 1 tbsp
  • Green chili 1 medium size
  • Red Chili Powder 1 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds ½ tsp
  • Urid dal 1 tsp
  • Dry Red Chili 3
  • Ginger & Garlic paste 1 tbsp
  • Perungayam ¼ tsp
  • Salt 1 tsp


  1. Add oil in a frying pan add mustard seed and urid dal till mustard pops
  2. Add onions and tomato until medium brown
  3. Now you can add the rest of the ingredients and cook them together
  4. Slightly add after 2 minutes to keep from drying up
  5. Keep it for another 2-4 minutes until they are cooked well and a blended consistency forms
  6. Remove chutney from the stove and pour it in a serving container
  7. Serve it hot with any combinations discussed above
