Sambar Recipe

Tamil recipes Simple Sambar is one of the first courses of a meal in southern India. Sambar is in a thick soup form and has essential nutrients for digestion and good health with protein. It is a main course and many do use it as a regular meal item and is to be eaten with white rice or side for idli, dosai and vadai. The main ingredients are toor dal, onions, tomato, tamarind, garlic, seeragam (cumin) and water.

Ingredients

  • Toor dal 1 cup
  • Tamarind 1 tbsp paste
  • Coriander/cilantro ½ cup
  • Green chili 1 medium
  • Whole Red chili 4
  • Cumin powder 2 tsp
  • Red chili powder 2 tsp
  • Perungayam/hing 1 tsp
  • Tomato ½ medium
  • Small (shallots) onions ¼ cup
  • Garlic 6 pods
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds 2 tsp
  • Water 4 cups


Method

  1. Here is the Sambar Recipe. Pour oil in a large deep pan and heat it. Add mustard and wait till the mustard pops then add and fry the tomato, garlic, green chili, red chili and onions for about 1 minute
  2. Add the powder ingredients like red chili, cumin, tamarind paste and Perungayam into the pan and add water; let it boil well for about 2-3 minutes
  3. Switch off the heat add coriander leaves and serve hot for rice
