Ravai Uppuma

Tamil recipes Ravai Upma is a simple breakfast or snack food item in south India.

Idli and dosai are another, This is simple and easy to make for housewives. It is also inexpensive and quick fix for emergencies. Try and enjoy it especially children love it with sugar or brown sugar.


  • ravai/sooji 1 cup
  • Curry leaves few
  • Red chili 2
  • Urid dal 1 tsp
  • Chana dal 1 tsp
  • mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Onions 2
  • Green chilies 2
  • Ginger 1 inch chopped
  • Turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • Oil or ghee ½ cup
  • Salt to taste


  1. Stir fry the rava for about 3 minutes in a large saucepan in a medium heat until golden brown
  2. Pour ghee or oil in another pan and add mustard seeds, cumin, urad dal, chana dal, red chili and curry leaves
  3. Add a cup water, cover to cook for about 3 minutes. Now you can add fried rava with salt, stir not to get lumps
  4. Let it on a low heat for the water has to dry. When it is soft and not soggy switch off the heat.
  5. Usually served Ravai Uppuma with sugar or chutneys or sambar or just plain
