Rasam Recipe

Tamil recipes Rasam is one of the basic items of southern India for ages. Rasam is in soup form and has essential nutrients for digestion and good health in general. It is not a main course though many do use it as such, but is a second course to be eaten with white rice. The main ingredients are tomato, tamarind, garlic, pepper, coriander, seeragam (cumin) and water.


  • Tamrind 1 tbsp paste
  • Coriander/cilantro ½ cup
  • Green chili 1 medium
  • Cumin powder 2 tsp
  • Whole pepper 5
  • Perungayam/hing 1 tsp
  • Tomato ½ medium
  • Small (shallots) onions ¼ cup
  • Garlic 6 pods
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds 2 tsp
  • Urid dal 2 tsp
  • Water 4 cups


  1. For Rasam Recipe pour water in a large bowl and add tomato, whole pepper, Perungayam/hing, garlic, green chili and cilantro all cut into small pieces, and mash all together them well.
  2. Add the seeragam (cumin powder), tamarind paste and salt
  3. Pour oil in a large deep pan and heat it. Add mustard and urid dal and wait till the mustard pops and fry the onions for about 1 minute
  4. Add the mashed ingredients from the bowl into the pan and close the lid, let it boil well for about 3 minutes
  5. Switch off the heat and serve hot for rice
