Kidney and Kathrikai Kootu Recipe

Tamil recipes Kidney and Kathrikai Kootu. This is a special flavorful lamb kidney recipe with kathrikai (eggplant). Kidney as such requires a special pallet and taste. This is an acquired taste and cannot be enjoyed by all. But if you like the organs recipes then this will delight you. Enjoy!


  • Lamb kidney 1 lb
  • Eggplant/kathrikai 2 cups cut
  • Sombu/fenugreek 2 tbsp
  • Coriander powder 1 tbsp
  • Cumin powder 1 tbsp
  • Green chili 2 medium
  • Red chili powder 2 tsp 5
  • Perungayam/hing 1 tsp
  • Small (shallots) onions ½ cup
  • Garlic 10 pods
  • Ginger ¼ cup
  • Curry leaves 15
  • Cinnamon, cloves 4 each
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Water 4 cups


  1. In a pressure cooker, cook the lamb kidneys for 20 minutes after the first whistle, with 4 cups of water, turmeric powder and red chili powder. Keep it aside
  2. Pour oil in a large deep pan and heat it. Add sombu and fry the tomato, garlic, ginger, green chili, cinnamon, cloves and onions for about 2 minute
  3. Add the powder ingredients cumin, coriander and perungayam into the pan and add little water. Add the eggplant/kathrikai to it and cook till kathrikai is tender and about ¾ cooked
  4. Now add the cooked kidney. Cook for about 2 more minutes and it should be done. Taste and kidney and kathrikai, if you are satisfied then switch off the heat serve hot
